Prices in Tokyo
Tokyo is the priciest of Japan's big four for a visitor, though it rarely matches London or New York for everyday spending. The real premium shows up in tourist-district cafés, hotel bars and sit-down dinners, while chain eateries, convenience shops and the subway stay remarkably reasonable. Eat where office workers eat and the capital becomes far more forgiving than its reputation.
The country average is ¥ 513 for coffee, ¥ 1,250 for lunch, ¥ 626 for beer, and ¥ 5,375 for dinner.
Hiroshima is the cheapest city.
Tokyo welcomed roughly 28.65 million overseas visitors in 2025, a record and up 15.6 per cent on the previous year, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Domestic travel dwarfs that figure: the capital also received about 479.96 million domestic visitors in 2025. Overseas visitors spent around ¥4.55 trillion in Tokyo in 2025, another record and almost 15 per cent more than in 2024. Japanese travellers added roughly ¥5.58 trillion of tourism spending in the city, so visitors of every kind are a major pillar of the capital's consumer economy.
